Proyecto Diaz Coffee, based in San Leandro, California
We are honored to announce our May Roaster of the Month, in part because of the heart and soul that comes through in their craft and conversations, but even more so because these folks have personal family ties to a coffee farm dating back generations, and they KNOW the ins and outs of production from farm to cup. Proyecto Diaz, a coffee roasting company primarily run by Fern Diaz and Hannah-Love Shibley, comes to us from San Leandro, California with a purpose of rebuilding one coffee farm at a time. Coffee isn’t just their story; it’s their hustle, their history, their culture, and the essence of who they are. They combine outstanding taste with direct impact at the source, building a bridge between the coffee drinker and the soul of that coffee, the farmer. Every cup of goodness is a tool to revitalizing communities around the world.
Proyecto Diaz started roasting in 2014 with the vision of integrating coffee with a mission, so they began by giving back 10% of their profits to their project farm, currently the Diaz family farm in Oaxaca, Mexico. Once the project farm is fully sustaining itself, they will move to a new project farm and the profit contributions continue there. They proudly source coffee from various countries, small-scale producers and co-ops exclusively. With the exception of 2 Ethiopians they are currently offering, 80-90% of their coffees are sourced from Latin American countries, and their purchasing is based on both taste and impact. They believe their vertical integration, along with their cultural and historical knowledge of coffee, allows them to better understand and help the small producer. And they do this by roasting the producer's delicious coffee with passion and purpose. When you buy Proyecto Diaz coffee, you are investing in job creation, farming sustainability, and livelihoods around the world. Ergo their motto—drink with purpose.
The Coffee / Farm
This coffee, Bella Vista, was grown by the Cifuentes & Roblero family on the northern ridge of the Sierra Madre del Sur mountain range in Chiapas, Mexico. Rosalba Cifuentes, the pioneering spirit behind this coffee, grew up in the region of Bella Vista, Chiapas, where her family and community have grown coffee for generations. She's now dedicated to the promotion of her community’s coffee, offering a sales platform to the often-overlooked producers. This particular lot was grown by four of her family members: Eugenio Roblero, Froilan Roblero Cifuentes, Otoniel Roblero Cifuentes, and Omar Roblero Cifuentes. Proyecto Diaz is proud to be one of the first roasters to have directly partnered with Rosalba and her family to exhibit this delicious coffee rooted in family history.
